(More customer reviews)It is true that these panniers are extremely cute and get lots of notice. They do appear to be well-made and are roomy--in fact, they are huge! A side benefit: I got the red ones because they will increase my visibility on busy Chicago streets! But! They flap and they shift and eventually a rear corner will begin to hit your spokes!
The first trip I took, I had to find a bike place en route because somehow the action fouled my brake cable, and I could barely get home without another catastrophe caused by shifting, and this isn't good in traffic! See, the buckles have to be woven around in such a way that they prevent the 'heavier side' (where I put my lock in this case--in yours might be that half gallon milk) from sagging more and more down. And then another thing, the two sides are joined by a strip of fabric that is six inches wide, and my rack where this strip of fabric would ride isn't six inches wide, only about four, and so the panniers hang down more than they were designed to do and when they bounce and bang on the right side, they can get hung up in cables because they aren't hanging straight down first of all, and second, are hanging down an extra inch on both sides, putting everything important in harm's way--I think that's probably how my brake lines got messed up. Well, I stopped and got a piece of (cedar! smells nice!) one by six as long as my rack and now the entire middle strip of pannier fabric is supported up top on the rack, they hang down less far on both sides and thus clear some bike hardware, and they seem to angle in less so I'm hoping that will stop the eventual spoke hitting. Also I found a way to weave the buckles front and back around whatever frame metal was handy in such a way that I THINK I might have stopped the gradual shifting of the whole thing to the heavier side.(If I could talk to the designers of the thing I'd ask them to sew on a couple of rings on the bike side--not the outside plane, in other words-- of each pannier so you could maybe tie them off on the rack frame and that might stop the infernal bouncing.) And just to be neat I also put two additional pieces of velcro on the outside plane of the panniers so that empty or full they are both flat and secured at least on that side. Otherwise they flapped more in the wind! (It has to be wind, because I don't go so very fast!)Naturally with all this fixin' they won't be as easy to take off and carry into a store, although I nailed nothing through the fabric in any way. But I wouldn't want to take it off and take it inside anyway, I'd probably bring the groceries out in the recycle bags and load the panniers outside.
I went to all this trouble because they're just adorable and sweet and screaming red. You can leave some things in them for a quick run into the library without tempting anyone to steal, because they're closed, not open like a basket.You'll like them too, but be aware you may have some fixes ahead. I don't know how long the trips are of the first reviewer, who didn't report these problems; I typically like to go seven or eight miles downtown and back with at least a normally heavy woman's purse, water bottle, couple of books, a recycle bag or two for purchases, crochet project, sun glasses case, and lock.
Update: my fixes worked. I also learned that one has to pack more carefully than rigid panniers, but once everything was in place I get the cuteness, the security, and the convenience.
